AIRPG.net will be a text-based open-world RPG that uses generative text AI and programming to allow you to create your own character in a fantasy world with persistent characters, locations, and short and long-term goals, simulated interpersonal dynamics with NPCs, quests, etc.
Features will include but not be limited to:
• Work as a salesperson in a shop, bargain with customers, upsell them, adapt your stock to local needs
• Fight as a gladiator in the arena, become famous for your fighting style
• Be the secondary character - find an NPC with Main Character Syndrome and help them achieve their goals - or betray them...
• Get scars from fights, lose a finger, be blinded in one eye, your character doesn't magically regenerate. Life isn't a switch that's either On or Off, you can escape a deadly situation with a missing hand, then stop adventuring and try to make a living selling gems as a traveling merchant. Until you get enough riches to hire mercenaries and hunt down the people who maimed you.
None of these features are implemented yet. There are tricky problems to solve in order to benefit from the easily generated creativity of generative text models, while also associating their output with enforceable consequences. If you have a conversation with an NPC and ask them to meet you behind the big oak tree at night, there needs to be code that can then make sure this NPC will have spawned there and be waiting for you, or code that notices you skipped the meeting and either makes the NPC upset with you, or makes them start searching for you out of worry.
Anticipating all the possibilities is not trivial, and will take time, however text-based systems hold the promise to be some of the first truly open-world experiences and I would like to be one of the people who contribute interesting, fun ideas to this genre which has yet to emerge.
